Thorium is a radio active metal. This thorium is usually put through an extraction process, which can be described as quite complex. The whole process involves lot of stages or is completed not in a single operation, but after a series of different types of processes. The chief ore or the commonly found mineral which forms the base for the whole series of complex processes is known as Monazite. This Monazite is found in nature in the form of sand, or Monazite sand.

The Monazite sand is now the core part of the Thorium extraction process. This core Monazite ore is now dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid. The Sulfuric acid is heated prior to mixing it up with the Monazite sand ore. The whole series of complex procedures now yields Thorium. This thorium yielded in such a manner is in an insoluble form and is extracted during an organic phase chemical reaction and this reaction creates a by product which is an amine. The next process will deal with the separation of the insoluble Thorium by the help of ions. Once these ions do their work, the thorium goes back in to the watery phase. This part constitutes the final part in the process of Thorium extraction.

The major reason which has contributed to the lack of knowledge about the places where Thorium can be mined out or to be more specific, the knowledge about the various places where the thorium or its ore, the Monazite sand ore can be resourced from, is the lack of any major efforts in this direction. Now the lack of any efforts being contributed in this area of exploration can be attributed to another important fact, that the demand for the Thorium metal is actually quite insignificant, be it for commercial or industrial or any other use.

There are 2 different and diverse groups of criteria by which the reserves of Thorium metal, present or distributed all over the world are actually found out. The first group of criteria is contributed by the United States Geological Survey and the second group of criteria are based on the reports and put forward by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Both the reports submitted by the 2 diverse agencies show a huge difference in their findings, except for one singular fact. The common fact in both the reports is that India is the mighty nation which has around 67 percent of the world’s Thorium resources and that means the best place to mine Thorium is in India.
