The Best Place To Mine Tin

Tin is a valuable chemical metal found in small percentage in earth’s crust and chiefly obtained from the mineral cassiterite. Tin has its applications in Industries as its major quality is that it bonds easily with other metals to form alloys. Pewter is an important alloy of tin used for making artistic designs in household by craftsmen. It is non- toxic and is used to coat lead, steel and zinc to prevent corrosion. Tin also acts as super conductors below3.72 K and In fact it was the first superconductor to be studied.

In 1970s, Malaysia was the largest producer of tin in the world, with around 1/3rd of its production but it has steadily fallen. In 2006, total tin mine production in the world was 321,000 tons and smelter production was 340,000 tons. Here tin and limestone are found together. In 2007, China was the largest producer of tin with the total tin mine production being114300 tons and smelter production being 129,000 tons. With the arrival of labour and influx of capital the tin industry expanded to become the largest in the world. But despite of all these facts and figure, Cornwall which is located in England in United Kingdom has been the best place for Tin Mining.

Mining in Cornwall has been continuing from the early Bronze Age which was around 2150 BC and it was visited by the metal traders from the Eastern. Unlike Malaysia, in Cornwall tin occurs in areas quite separate from limestone. Tin has been traded and produced here for over 2000 years. Initially tin mining took place exploiting deposits and then later exploiting deeper mines. Originally alluvial deposits in the gravels were exploited and later underground work took place. Shallow cuttings were used to extract ore. Cornwall has rich metal deposits and it has always been associated with tin mining.

To produce tin of high purity, smelting of tin is necessary. Unlike Copper, it was smelt locally and tin of high purity was produced. During the 18th century, Penzance had the largest smelter in Cornwall. There is political support to the Tin miners and they could mine on any land of their choice that has not been enclosed. Legally they are excused from the different taxes such as military tax and the normal tax. And so it is considered safe to do business of mining in Cornwall. This is the reason that many companies are now progressing towards Cornwall region of Britain and making it popular all the more than before.
