The Mining Process
The process of extraction of minerals which includes the valuable metals including gold, diamond, brass etc. is termed as the mining. In common terms the digging and extraction of non-renewable energy sources like petrol, diesel, LPG etc. is also termed the same. These natural resources are generally found in the earth crust and thus have to be geologically excavated. The geological process of this digging up includes various steps. Generally the resource for which the mining process is carried out is done for those elements or compounds which cannot be produced in the laboratory conditions in a synthetic process.
Mines actually involves the detection of veins, ore bodies, etc. where actually the raw form or impure form termed as the metal ore. Even if it is not also a metal, impurities are associated in those cases too. Mining is generally categorized into two main sub processes known as Underground Mining and Surface Mining. Surface mining is much common among these two due to the fact that most of the natural resources in all the parts of the world ranging from 70%-85% is actually found in the surfaces of the earth.
The process of surface mining is comparatively simple compared to the other one. In this process a belt of land where the resource is located is peeled off using various machines like Cranes. Even open-colliery mining is common where in a pit is dug in order to help in the extraction process. Generally a surface strip is peeled off in this process. Using the dug off colliery the resource is mined. This can generally be done from places where the resources are located superficially on the surface.
In the underground mining process a channel or passageway is dug off. Various steps in this process include creation of horizontal or parallel drift tunnels are created in order to encounter the underlying metal. This process is employed in the process of extraction of coal, petroleum, gold etc... Both the process mentioned above includes the use of heavy machinery including digging machines, machines to separate the mined materials from the impurities or gangue using gravity or magnetic separation method. Trams are used for the transportation of mined mineral. A water channel otherwise known as the sluice gateway, controlled by a head gate is also used. A shaking channel is used to remove the dust and the earth soil associated.
After the physical separation is over the metal ore is taken to the industry for the separation using laboratory conditions and chemicals.
