Uk Coal Mines
Even as far back as the late Tudor period, the mining of coal took place in the United Kingdom. But it was only in the late 18th century that the UK began exploring deep shaft mining and from then on it began to develop quite extensively. Its expansion became more rapid through the 19th century through to the early 20th century, which was when the industry truly peaked.
Coal was so plentiful in the UK that the supply almost always could be raised in order to keep up with the rapidly increasing demand for it. From the years of 1770 to 1780, the output of coal from UK coal mines every year was around six million tons. However, after the year 1790, the output increased a great deal, and reached sixteen million tons by the year 1815, which was during the peak of the Napoleonic War.
Coal mines in the UK were taken into government control in 1947 but the coal industry of the UK had been a political issue for a long time, from the beginning of the 20th century. This was mainly due to both world wars making people realize that coal supplies needed to be maintained as they were a primary source of energy.
UK Coal PLC is currently the biggest coal mining company in the UK. The company is located in Harworth, Nottinghamshire. The London Stock Exchange lists this company and it is a former part of the FTSE 250 Index.
Richard J. Budge is the founder of the Company in 1974 but the company was called RJB Mining. The UK mining industry was privatized in 1994 and then it grew fivefold after it obtained British Coal's core operations. The company's founder retired in 2001 and it was then the name of the company was changed to UK Coals.
There are deep mines in the UK located at Welbeck, Daw Mill, Thoresby and Kellingley, and they are all operated UK Coal. Coal extraction in the UK has decreased over the past ten years from 37.1 million annual tones to approximately 1.5 million tones from 1995 to 2007.
Imported coal has become more and more costly over the recent years and as a result coal that is mined in Britain has become much more economically viable. The United Kingdom has started looking into renewable sources of energy in the past few years. They are looking into mine-gas recovery to generate electricity, and is also looking to expand into wind farms.
