Uranium Mining Companies

Uranium is a radioactive element which comes from the actinide group. Uranium acts like a fuel in the nuclear power plants. The extraction of uranium from earth's crust is called as uranium mining. The uranium mining works as open-pit mining due to its volume-intensive and low concentration nature. Since the resource is rare, the uranium mining is carried out in a few countries throughout the world. Uranium mining took its peak during the World War II. Strangely enough, the mining companies were unaware about the 'value' of by-product of uranium. Charlie Steen was supposed to be the major prospector who spurred uranium mining during 1940s and 1950s in the western US.

Development in uranium production has become a burning problem before the government officials and scientists. Uranium is a threat to public health, water, and the ecosystem. Thence, Grand Canyon Watersheds Protection Act is passed in order to ban uranium mining. Still, under the name of 'insecurity' and 'protection' many developed countries like US are at the forefront in the production of uranium mining. A reputed survey denotes that there are six categories of uranium mining companies. Anglogold Ashanti Ltd with the main office in South Africa, and Anglo American PLC with the main office at London these are considered as the first category uranium mining companies. Areva NC is the big uranium company whose owner is the atomic energy commission of France. Russian has not lagged behind in the uranium mining, as JSC Priargunsky Production Mining and Chemical Association is the owner of Atomredmetzoloto OJSC.

The second category consists of the lease, own or prospect for mine uranium. Urangesellschaft and Stepnoye Mining Company of Germany, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, and Rossing Uranium Ltd of Somair are some of the uranium supplying countries to the world. Cotter Corp, Denison Mines Corp, Diamo, China National Nuclear Corporation, Cogema, Cominak, Energy Resources of Australia, Geam, Heathgate Resources Pty Ltd, and Industrias Nucleares do Brasil are some of the uranium mining owner countries. The third category of uranium mining companies is intended to gain rights to uranium mining; while the fourth category is engaged in owning uranium deposits. The fifth one is arranging to develop uranium mines, and the sixth category has been planning to uranium mining. The list of privately as well as public owned uranium mining companies is ongoing. Thus, uranium mining companies have transformed the world from a fossil fuel to the modern fuel system based on nuclear energy.
