Welsh Coal Mines

Coal mines are known to extensively be present in the European continent as the use of coal is the fueling energy behind industrialization in Europe. The use of coal has shaped economies in this continent through out history. There are many countries which produce coal and one of them is Wales in England. Mining in this part of the world has been a significant source of income to the benefiting country, in this case Britain.

 

Coal has been mined in Wales since early nineteenth century. Coal mines were found in Rhondda valley, the south Wales valleys and the south Wales coalfields. By 1913 Cardiff had become one of the recognized coal exporting port in the world, logistic for transporting coal included road, rail and the sea.

 

Coalfield were also found in the North East Wales and one of the coal fields that formed a list of this coalfield in this area were the Tower Colliery situated near Hirwaun. This mine has awarded itself to be known as the oldest open coal mine and the largest too in the entire world.

 

History dates show that here coal mining goes back to the year 1261 at Mostyn and the dates are not clear because some believe the mine to have been in existence as early as the Roman times. Blaenavon is another area that has been known to operate mines as early as the 14th century.

 

Coal mining activities in Wales have also been noted to be major cause of civil uprisings. In 1831, it was reported that someone called Dic Penderyn became a martyr for industrial workers and this was during the Merthyr Rising. Other reported uprisings are the Newport rising in the year 1839. Task force in these mines included boys as little as ten years of age, women also worked at these mines, however the mining act restricted these to only fully grown men.

 

Mining in Wales is full of history, governments and people alike have shaped the industries ever since this year. It was reported that in 1980 coal ran out in Wales that even the biggest coal mine at the time, Big pit had to close operations.

 

These mine pits stand today as coal mining museum, the big pit coal museum, located in Blaenavon won the prestigious Gulbenkian prize in the year 2005. Other coal mine museums are the South Wales Miner’s Museum in Cymmer, Cefn Coed Colliery Museum in Crynant, Rhondda Heritage Park near Trehafod.
