Welsh gold is very costly because of its rare occurrence, and is found in only two different areas of Wales. The two areas are North Wales and South Wales. Welsh gold is famous from the time of Welsh princes and it is said these princes wore Welsh gold. But there is no surety about that because at that time gold was completely imported from Ireland and Ireland was the major producer of gold at that time.

Dolaucothi gold mines are the earliest gold mines known for extracting Welsh gold. The Dolaucothi god mines are said to be opened during the Bronze Age and it was shut down in 1938 and in 1941 the gold mine was donated to the national trust. The village which was located near the gold mine always reported to find several golden items.

Dolaucothi is well known for its large scale production of welsh gold from the time of ancient roman's it is believed that every possible way like extraction through hydraulic mining was also used at that time, the entire team who carried out the mining process were roman military men as traces of roman military was found near the mine.

The Dolaucothi mines are still open for the tourists and tourists can visit some of the underground mines with a trained instructor.

The Gwynfynydd mine was situated in north Wales and this has produced more than 45000 ounces of gold. This mine was in operation from 1860 and it was closed in 1998. The mine was very profitable for the owners and it is today open for tourists. This mine was closed for health and safety purpose as the weather was changing continuously. This mine provided some of the best Welsh gold of all times.

Welsh gold is found rarely in nature and it is very different from the gold found in South Africa. When a Welsh gold is extracted it is red in colour due to the mixture of some copper into it. But after the gold is refined it takes the normal yellow colour and can be easily differentiated from other gold. The isotopic composition of Welsh gold is completely different from other common gold found in different mining fields. The Welsh gold is different from South African gold but because of its rare occurrence it is very costly in general market. The Welsh gold holds its own importance as this gold is completely different from other gold in the market.
