Materials Man

The job of a materials man can vary from industry field to field. In the Construction industry materials man is the person responsible for supplying materials used in the construction or repair of a property. In the construction field the job is an entry level job; very little is required in experience or academically. In the warehousing field the materials man, oversees subordinate material handler(s). In the oil industry, the materials man job is also an entry level job with room for advancement. Positions start at Materials Handler/sub materials man and with further experience and education can become Senior Materials Man. Although the job title does indicate a male title, women may fill this position as well. The position of materials man in the oil industry requires more effort because of the very detailed job tasks and the work environment. In the oil industry this position can be located on oil rigs (onshore and offshore); there are similar positions at a well site and on the pipeline. A materials man in the oil industry is in charge of the maintenance of stores; the ordering and receiving of stock; the storing, issuing disposal and recovery of mechanical systems; assures all materials transactions are accurately performed; must be computer literate; responsible for physical inventory audits; reconciliation of internal and external storage locations; also on some jobs the materials man has to ensure that unsafe acts and or conditions no matter where found, are reported in order to be corrected and provides technical and operational instructions to. One disadvantage is that on smaller oil rigs there may be only one materials man position and therefore whenever cargo comes in no matter what the time, they are responsible for checking it in. For interested candidates the job duties necessitate a background in warehousing activities and materials handling. Receiving knowledge is helpful. Some logistics training can be a plus and a working knowledge of transporting materials can add to the possibility of working this job. On an oil rig the job as a materials man is more comfortable than many other positions. The job is also not as physically demanding. But as with all positions; it is crucial to the proper around the clock functioning of an oil rig.
