Mining Training

The mining industry is suffering from recruitment issues. The current workforce is an older nearing retirement group of workers; due to past lay offs and downsizing. A younger work force is needed but difficult to attract. Mining jobs can be hazardous causing younger people to shun the job. Also the job is physically demanding and continually changing. The current older workforce is less comfortable with change but more experienced on the job. A younger workforce would cope with the constant changes but would have less experience and may be prone to more accidents. The mining workforce has many jobs but the need for a comprehensive training program is affecting the ability to attract workers. Mining jobs are positions such as; Explorers: a team of geologists looking for new deposits to mine.

Mine Designers: once a location is found a team of mining engineers, technicians and environmental engineers work together to determine if the location is commercially viable.

Mechanics and Electricians: work to keep equipment running and the mine powered.

Miners: drill operators, explosive experts, loading machine operators.

Mine Safety: inspect the safety of the mine. Rock dust machine operators, Stabilizers and Brattice Builders work within mine safety.

Today the trend in mining training is a development of collaborative materials by companies in the same industry for the training of all workers. The particular usefulness of collaborative materials concerns transferable training versus non-transferable training. Transferable training is a form of training that can be used on other jobs. Also employee participation stimulates the morale of employees. The use of incentives also encourages employee feedback. Additionally the active involvement of workers increases and maintains their skill knowledge. Mining employees come from various cultural backgrounds. The cultural differences in the workplace have an effect on the workers in the form of communication issues. Communication and understanding is important when training workers of different backgrounds. A comprehensive training program could include increasing literacy among workers by employing translators/interpreters familiar with the technical terms of the job. Also signs and training aids using visual clues to keep could keep communication at a maximum, while ensuring that all employees understand the job.
