New Construction Painting
New construction painting may be a more difficult and time-consuming process than it first looks. With new construction painting, every nook and cranny of a house is being painted for the first time, which will require maximum effort and care.
The first step in new construction painting doesn't involve painting at all. It involves caretaking--more precisely, the cleaning up of drywall and any other surfaces that are going to be painted. If the drywall is covered in dust or is rough, the paint will not adhere properly and the end result will look shotty. Taking the extra time to clean off dust and sand down any rough areas will help make sure the paint looks good when the process is complete. Also, make sure that all windows are covered with plastic and the walls are taped off so you have clear boundaries.
The next step in new construction painting is the application of primer, or a white paint, on all walls. This step must be taken, no matter what color paint is going to be used. The primer serves as a base and prevents any damage being done to the drywall itself.
Once it is time for the real painting to begin, make sure a water-based paint is being used. Petroleum based paints are no longer as effective as they once were and still contain ingredients that can catch fire. There have also been exposure issues, primarily among construction crews but, in some cases, with homeowners as well.
Two coats of paint should be used once the primer has been dried, to make sure it is completely covered. The second coat of paint should not be started until the first one has dried, to make sure the second coat reaches its full effectiveness.
New construction painting should be done at a constant temperature and the paint should be stored in a climate-controlled area. If one coat of paint is applied on a cooler day and the second coat is applied when it is much warmer, the final result may not be the desired on. If the paint is left out in the heat, the same problem could occur.
Since there is so much painting to be done with new construction painting, the use of a powered paint sprayer is probably a good idea. The sprayer will finish the process a lot faster than using a brush or rollers, and is a great deal less trouble.
