Aluminum Forging
Working with aluminum is reputed to be easy, and there are many facts in support of this. As an element, aluminum is described as malleable, which is a term describing the ease of forging or working with the metal. In comparison, steel and iron are a little more stubborn, and that’s why the most abundant forgings regardless of the setting are almost always made of aluminum. It’s the rare metal that can be bent into any imaginable shape, so long as the right equipment is made available.
An aluminum forging can be directly ordered from a manufacturer or producer of aluminum. They always have the equipment to forge the metal into any shape and size that you have in mind. During the initial process, you get to work with a metallurgist, or any other metal expert, to determine things such as the quality of the forging that you want, in terms of grade, and the conductivity and corrosive resistance levels that you are in need of. Any good forger always has a ready inventory listing the available grades. It is also good to establish the size of the aluminum parts that you want. There are exceptional times when you may want a forging that is too heavy to manually haul without mechanical assistance. Getting the right fabricator is severely important, if you want such unique needs met.
As far as the aluminum forging process goes, establishing the right forging temperature is important, more so for the extrusion process that is commonly used. For the temperature to be set, the extrusion method has to be predetermined first- whether it’s the warm or hot one. Even the cold extrusion process needs the right temperature settings. Needless to reiterate, getting the die and the bar stock, or billet, at exactly the right temperature is the most integral part of aluminum forging. These two things guarantee products with a smooth finish, without cracks or imperfections. This consistency in quality is something most customers look for. In addition, it conserves the die, by discouraging sticking, and thus ensuring a longer life before replacement is necessary.
Aluminum forging products include everything from aluminum rings, bars, rods, hubs, spindles, and so on. These should guarantee fatigue resistance, more so if they are used in construction, together with superior structural integrity. Ideally aluminum forging should incorporate the finishing processes that include heat treating and anodizing where necessary, as well as polishing.
