Aluminum Sulfate
Aluminum sulfate is a chemical compound that is used for purifying waste water in waste water treatment plants. The flocculating properties of aluminum sulfate allow it to be used in the paper manufacturing industry as well. There are many different industrial applications for aluminum sulfate. Aluminum sulfate is created by adding aluminum hydroxide to sulfuric acid. Impurities in waste water can be removed by the addition of aluminum sulfate. Aluminum sulfate coagulates with the impurities and sinks to the bottom of the container. It can also be used to reduce pH of garden soil. The aluminum sulfate hydrolyzes to form aluminum hydroxide. This substance precipitates and dilutes sulfuric acid. Therefore aluminum sulfate can be purchased in bulk for agricultural purposes.
Other applications involve pesticides, antiperspirants, baking powder and as an accelerator for speeding the process of solidifying the concrete. Aluminum sulfate has many uses in industries and homes. It is widely used as a form of garden fertilizer which also promotes growth of certain plants. There are many industries that create aluminum sulfate on a large scale. Purchasing large quantities of aluminum sulfate must be stated with authorities as it has detrimental effects on certain types of soil. Another important use of aluminum sulfate is in foam stabilizer. When exposed to high temperatures aluminum sulfate decomposes to alumina and sulfur trioxide.
Carbon dioxide is trapped within the foam. Once it is released it forms thick foam which can float on hydrocarbon fuels. The thick foam is capable of sealing off oxygen sources which can cause fires to expand. Aluminum sulfate is used as a pesticide for a particular species of slug that can cause severe harm to crops in certain countries. Aluminum sulfate usage is limited by certain regulations. It has been identified as water pollutant and is known to disrupt ecological food chains.
Aluminum sulfate is also used to control color and bloom frequency in certain plants. Aluminum sulfate directly reduces the pH of the soil. Over prolong exposure soil can become extremely acidic. Acidic soil is extremely inhospitable and plants cannot grow. Mixing lime acid peat with aluminum sulfate can help regulate soil and keep it stable. Changing color of flowering plants can be accomplished by using acidic and alkaline fertilizers. Liming and aluminum sulfate are two of the most common garden fertilizers used in homes and in agriculture. Aluminum sulfate can be purchased at garden accessory stories.
