Anodized Aluminum

Aluminum is often alloyed to increase its strength, but this alone is not sufficient. That’s why oxidation has to be encouraged. For most other metals, an oxide coating depreciates the metal, but aluminum is an exception. The coat is actually desired because it makes the aluminum harder. Quite naturally, when aluminum is exposed to atmospheric oxygen, it is quickly oxidized and a layer of aluminum oxide is formed. The layer is not thick enough, and that’s why it’s artificially induced in a process called anodizing. Anodized aluminum is more resistant to corrosion and it is harder too. It is also non-conductive, so use is limited in places where thermal conductivity is the most important characteristic.

The use of anodized aluminum is rampant in both large and small scales. Large scale use is with construction where aluminum is used. Anodizing it makes it better equipped to deal with the elements. On a smaller scale, it is used in the making of kitchen utensils. Cookware made of anodized aluminum is highly preferred by chefs. That’s because it offers even heat distribution to ensure even cooking. It is hard and long lasting, which means replacements won’t be necessary for a long time. Some people are misguided to believe that the oxide layer will peel off and contaminate the food being cooked, but that’s severely inaccurate. The melting point of the oxide layer is too high for this to be any real risk. Anodized aluminum cookware is safe, and will not alter the taste of your food whatsoever. In many cases, it has been quoted to be better than stainless steel more so in terms of longevity.

As far as the anodizing is concerned, there are many approaches that you can take. The most common method used is with acid, either sulfuric or chromic acid. Anodizing aluminum is more adhesive to paint as compared to the metal itself. This is a characteristic that is well explored, especially because it gives the aluminum a chance to be customized to personal liking. Over time, the paint dye may wear off, but that never means that the anodizing aluminum is depreciating in quality. While it is entirely possible to anodize your aluminum, it is advised that you first verse yourself well with the science before you proceed. This way you will better understand the kind of alloys you are working with, and hopefully achieve a certain quality standard upon anodizing.
