Clean Coal Technologies

The so called clean coal technologies have been gaining more and more popularity for the last few years. Of course, that should not surprise anybody since the coal obtaining and usage have been proved to be more harmful for the environment than any other activity. Yes, it sounds surprising but even the oil obtaining does not do so much harm to the environment.

But why is coal so dangerous and polluting? Is it only because of the obtaining? The answer of the last question certainly is: absolutely not! The point is that the planet suffers several times from the coal obtaining. The first time is at the very beginning- when the coal is being obtained. That is related to emitting hundreds of tons of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Furthermore, it is thought that the ‘extracting materials’ from the underground could be dangerous and cause earthquakes in the future.

Of course, that is not all! The second time is when the coal is being transported to the place where it is supposed to be delivered. Often, the distance is like hundreds of kilometers. Just think about all emissions which will be released in the atmosphere. And the third (fortunately, the last also) time is by using the coal. A whole ‘cocktail’ of gases is released- carbon dioxide, methane, ammonia and many others. Unfortunately, most of the gases released are known and have been proved to be responsible for the greenhouse effect. So if we need to generalize, the usage of coal contributes a lot to the main problem which our society is trying to solve- the global warming.

But can we stop using coal? Do you think that we really could do that? No, of course not! Even in the most developed countries (such as US, France, UK, Germany and Japan) the percentage of usage of nuclear and alternative sources of energy is very small. Just look at that: 51% of the electricity produced in the United States is generated in coal fire plants.

Fortunately, there is something else which could be done. Instead of ceasing to use coal, we could just find better and clean coal technologies. This way, our needs of electricity, central heating etc. will be satisfied while the environment is taken care of. What could be better than that? Luckily, many scientists have worked on the issue and there are already some very interesting technologies for clean coal obtaining.
