Clean Coal Technology

Coal has many detrimental effects to the environment, and the levels of carbon emissions are surprising. But then again, coal is a very profitable power source as far as electricity generation is concerned. So in a bid to make both sides happy, investments in clean coal technology have been made. Clean coal is basically coal that is really low in emission and other pollutants whatsoever. The technology is still young, with the biggest challenge being faced being the overall expense. Nonetheless, it is an admirable step in the right direction.

The techniques used in the cleaning coal are not overall complex. Granted, there are intricacies that are rather difficult to grasp but the outlines of the procedures lack sophistication. One method employed is chemical washing where minerals and impurities from the coal are removed. Other used methods include gasification to create a syngas, carbon capturing, or even treating the emitted gases with steam. Because of the newness of the technology, these and other methods are being improved on for greater efficacy.

In the modern world, the use of clean coal technology is not yet as rampant, and that’s because it is only recent. That is in the perspective of a clean coal power plant in precision. On a brighter side though, the process of coal cleaning has been going on for quite a while now, for instance, via the use of electrostatic precipitators and fabric filters, and washing prior to burning to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. Some of these have been used for sometime, but the percentage reduction achieved is not completely satisfying. That explains why so many efforts are being put into developing even better coal cleaning methods, to reach the point where there are zero emissions.

While renewable energy and nuclear power are lighting the way for the future of electricity generation, coal cannot be cast aside altogether. There are so many resources for it, and the growing demands for power only reinforce the fact that coal can simply not be disregarded. Of course, even with clean coal technology offering the solution, there is the question of whether the profitability of utilizing the coal will remain. But perhaps the bigger goal is getting rid of carbon dioxide as a global warmer through such methods as carbon capture and storage (CSS). Finding common ground between retaining profits and reducing carbon emissions to near zero is the aim. And with clean coal technology receiving a lot of backing, said common ground has been reached.
