Coal Bed Methane Drilling
Ever since the discovery of mining and all of the benefits that go along with it there has also been methane drilling. Previously methane was seen as hazardous. If a methane deposit was ever found amongst coal or anywhere in a coal mine, a halt to work would be called as the methane was vented out and dispersed into the atmosphere before work could continue. Even if they realized the importance that methane could have had then, people surely didn’t think that the methane found during the drilling process could have anything constructive done with it. It was too small a source to make a significant profit if sold, and it was just large enough to be harmful to miners. However recently, after it was discovered that methane is a byproduct of the coal formation process, the methane deposits that are found are drilled out and extracted in a process that is known as coal bed methane drilling. It was logical back then to think that a few deposits of methane wouldn’t end up totaling out to all that much, so letting a few go would be negligible, but since this purposeful extraction took place and companies have started to try to make money off of the idea, the methane that comes from coal bed methane drilling has made up nearly ten percent of all of the methane sold in the form of natural gas all across America and the lower states.
Coal bed methane drilling was understandably seen as unsafe but now it is almost a reward for whoever finds a methane deposit. The methane can be just as valuable as coal, and since the two basically go hand in hand, it is hard not to see all of the missed business opportunities that flew away with the wind the second that all of those miners in the old days just let the methane drift out of their cave. This has become a somewhat lucrative process by now and it has since become the type of thing that is looked at strangely for people that choose not to participate in it. It is basically free money that someone is passing up on, and as long as it is attempted to be safely extracted, it won’t exactly be a health hazard, since they’ll be doing their best to capture the gas and won’t be worried about continuing their mining duties until the gas has been captured totally and completely.
