Coal Mine Explosion
A dangerous coal mine explosion recently took place in the West Virginia area. It was lethal and ended up killing numerous miners that were on duty that day. Few in the immediate vicinity of the explosion survived, and those that could have survived are missing. They are presumed dead. Tragedies like this don’t happen as often as the media makes it out to be, but what is worth discussing is the fact that though it is not as likely that you will be killed in an explosion if you’re a miner, many miners are forced to work under horrendous conditions daily. They are forced to endure fatigue, stroke, claustrophobia, and all kinds of other negative feelings and emotions all in the name of making a few dollars. Around 50% of our nation’s electricity is supplied by coal and maybe even more. Thus the demand for coal is high and many more miners are recruited every day to undergo these lethal conditions. Few have an outlet to complain in fact few ever get any attention by the media because they are too busy working every day. Mining is not just a job, it is a lifestyle and it is one that is fraught with danger. Because of events like the recent coal mine explosion, the media will shift their gaze for however momentary a second over to the plight of miners so we may finally realize how terrible the job is and how we need to make conditions better for them.
The media is a powerful force and their coverage of the coal mine explosion is vital to assisting in making things better for miners all around. They need to be able to have someone to speak for them because they haven’t the ability to speak for themselves. Finally they are getting attention and people are realizing that something needs to be done in order to make this situation better. Now all we have to do is come up with the actual plan of action to take that will help to get them in a better position to have a better quality of life. They can go on strike now and people will notice. They can break bones and hurt themselves as they do every day and this time people will finally notice. They need to have better insurance, better pay, better tools that will help them mine coal more efficiently. They need change and they need it now. They can’t do it without others lobbying for them, so at least one good thing came out of this tragedy.
