Coal mines in Kentucky make up a great deal of the east coast’s coal distribution. States like Michigan that are always in dire need of coal will usually look to Kentucky to help provide them with more coal. This isn’t so bad if it weren’t for the fact that this is not a sustainable practice. The more coal that goes from Kentucky into other states means the less coal Kentucky will have to provide to its own citizens in the future. This is a necessary amount and not something that can simply be disregarded. For the time being coal mines in Kentucky show no signs of drying out, but that is only for the time being. Coal mines in Kentucky could very well dry out in the next 50 years and this would mean that all of the coal that other states purchase from Kentucky would have to be gotten from other states, and once it is gone from those states they will go to other states and so on until all the coal is gone out of America and we have to rely on different countries to provide us with more coal. And if you keep going down that line, more coal mines will be dying every day because the coal is being spread too wide. There’s just too much to cover and not enough coal; in the world to cover it all.

Of course, for now, there is and when we see coal mines in Kentucky churning out a steady supply of coal each day we are pretty inclined to think that there is a lot of hope for the world and that we will be able to keep this up for some time. You may be happy to know that is the case. The way mines are running we may have enough to supply us comfortably for the next 50 to 100 years and that is when growth is accounted for too. So there isn’t much reason to sweat now. But we have to also be realistic and realize that 50 or 100 years is not that much time. If we start exporting all of our coal to other states then those states will end up burning down our supply instead of the state it came from and this will only contribute to us reaching that destination where we are helpless faster and faster. The best way to combat this is instead of states importing more coal, when they run out; tell the states to conserve electricity, to come up with alternative energies. It is the only way if we hope to survive and to still be able to use electricity in the future.
