Coal mines in Queensland have recently come under the media spotlight because due to the floods that have been occurring in that area, poisonous and highly toxic material that was never supposed to make it out of the mines until it had reached a more manageable state had been swept up into the water supply and is now threatening all the citizens of Queensland. Right now people seem to be disregarding this as this disaster has merely been a foot note in media reports as of late, but the true nature of this will be known once the floods cease and people start to try to get their lives back to normal, only to realize that the water that they just barely got back into submission is now poisonous too. That realization is almost depressing, because it is something that is not too important now, but will inevitably become important and it is something that has already been reported. So people know that when they finally do get rid of all of their problems with excess water, there is just one more problem to worry about and that’s how to get it uncontaminated. The water is unsafe to use in any capacity, not for bathing, or drinking, or anything.

Coal mines in Queensland are not the only mines guilty of producing waste that is tough to manage. Each year, plants all over the world routinely pump out millions and millions of tons of sludge all produced in the act of trying to maintain and synthesize coal into a more usable form. However most of this sludge is dealt with and disposed of appropriately in as environmentally conscious a way possible in order to keep people and the environment around us healthy and free of disease. Unfortunately in this case, the coal mines in Queensland had not reached the stage yet where they were ready to get rid of all of their waste material in the appropriate way, and still had it essentially scattered around all over the place just waiting to be taken care of. This was never able to be done though because the flood took it away and now it is threatening the water supply of the city. This is something that will not be resolved easily, but once it is it will serve as a warning to future generations to prevent things like this from happening again. We need to keep abreast on current things like this in order to preserve our safety in the future. It is crucial to do this.
