Coal Mining Accidents

One of the most dangerous jobs to have is being a coal minor. There were over 920 injuries and nine deaths just in one year from coal mining accidents, this was in 2007. There are several miners that are reported missing and never found, they are presumed dead and added to that years death toll, others are found weeks later trapped by falling debris, and some show up a few hours later with an extraordinary story to tell.

There are several causes of coal mining accidents. If you see on the news a report from an accident within a mine, more than likely it is from Methane explosions, they are the most common among causes. Other causes of death or injury can come from a stockpile collapse, shield collapse, a miner falling, getting burned, possibly electrocuting themselves, not having proper knowledge of how to correctly work equipment, and possibly a malfunction with the equipment.

Once an accident has occurred, the miner along with their entire family, are faced with many hardships. If surgery is needed, the cost of the medical bills could be outrageously high, along with having to return to the doctor for several visits after the surgery. While out of work, if there are no other means of income, that family may eventually lose everything they have accumulated. Coal mining accidents prevent some miners from ever returning to the workforce.

Even if a miner is not injured to the point of needing surgery, there is still an emotional state that might require counseling services. Posttraumatic Stress disorder is very common for those that have obtained injuries from a mining accident. Anyone, not only miners, can experience a life threatening event and be diagnosed with this disorder, it is not only those that suffer injuries from coal mining accidents. The support of the miner’s family is definitely needed after an accident, the feeling of being alone is mainly the first thing noticed about Posttraumatic Stress.

Being a coal miner has some of the same benefits of a job in a factory, as far as workers compensation; however, there may be certain limits on the benefits that a worker may receive. There are specific attorneys that deal with injury cases of individuals, many have represented those that have acquired injuries while working in the mines or the family of those that have died from the result of the many coal mining accidents that are reported each year.
