It is doubtful that there are many people who have heard of the term ‘metallurgical coal’ and there are probably even fewer people who know what it means. Anyway, saying ‘coke’ is probably much more familiar and better-known. Well, the ‘big’ news is that they both mean the same thing.

However, when talking about coke, you are probably wondering what its applications are. After all, that is what matters the most about a product or whatever else. Doubtfully, you will be surprised by the fact that the metallurgical coal has got hundreds of applications. Yes, that’s right: it is used for plenty of activities and technical operations.

Let’s take the iron and steel industry. Coke is used for smelting iron and all other iron-containing materials. What the coke mainly serves for is heating purposes in these industries: melting the iron, steel and other similar materials. And not only is the metallurgical coal used for heating but also as a reducing agent producing iron.

As you can see the production of metallurgical coal is of great significance for the development of many industries, bringing a large part of a country’s incomes. So, it should not be surprising that the coke plants’ importance have been increasing for the last few years also. In fact, the number of this kind of plants continues increasing as the most dramatic increase was witness in the last few years of the last century.

Here is a simple example. There were exactly 31 coke plants in the Untied States in 1994. Only 10 years earlier, there were only 15. That means that it did not take more than a decade for a double increase! Those facts speak volume about the importance of metallurgical coal. It could be claimed for sure that countries having good storages of coke within their territory are much more likely to become continental or even world economy leaders.

No, it is definitely not fair that the economic strength of a country could be determined by just one single factor. Furthermore, the country itself had not done anything for being ‘blessed’ with such a fortune like the metallurgical coal is. However, facts are facts: countries such as the United States, Germany and Russia have one of the largest storages of coke. Also, those countries have the most successful economies in the world. You do not think that it is just a matter of chance, do you?
