Pike River Coal
There are many coal companies in the world, but there is only one listed coal company in all of New Zealand, and that is Pike River Coal. This company so happens to be one of the largest providers in the world of premium coking coal. While the coal itself or the steam created from these coals is not necessarily essential to people in the electric business who are only using the stuff to create electricity, coking coal is very important to people in the steel industry. This is because once coking coal is heated up, the way you can tell the difference between coking coal and thermal coal is coking coal leaves behind a thick, hard residue whereas thermal coal that goes through the heating process only leaves behind ash and dust fragments or occasional debris. This “coke” left behind by coking coal may look like trash to most people because they would not know what to do with it, but if there’s one company out there big enough to rival the electric industry, it is the steel industry, and this coke is utilized by the steel industry as a formative element of the steel they create, Without this leftover coal residue they would not be able to create steel, one of the hardest toughest substances we know of. And thanks to Pike River Coal of New Zealand we are able to see more steel in this world than we ever thought possible.
The one unfortunate thing about it being the only company in New Zealand to deal in coal is that they have an uncontested monopoly. Of course if ever accused of forming a monopoly they would probably deny it, and there would be no real evidence against them. Anyone out there is welcome to come up with a new mine or find a new one in New Zealand, but that’s just the issue, unless someone has a tip as to the location of a coal deposit, and a lot of money to purchase the land necessary to do such digging and enough men to start their own business, then it’s likely that coal will never see the light of day. That is until PRC comes to pick it all up because being New Zealand’s only listed coal company, they are the only ones with the man power and the money to be able to handle a job like that, and at the thought of money, anyone would be able to sell off their land to them for the right sum.
