Rio Tinto Coal
Rio Tinto Coal is another Australian coal company. There are actually quite a few prosperous coal companies in Australia at the present moment. Rio Tinto Coal happens to be in control of at least 5 known mines and possibly a few more that go unreported on their website. Their site is host to many colorful pictures of aboriginal children to give the business a more authentic feel and make the site seem more familiar and family friendly to anyone that looks at it. However anyone that scrutinizes it carefully, or really looks into it at all should take a moment to stop and think about what they’re really viewing. This site is all about coal and is all about mining and making money to produce electricity. So why then are kids being featured on the front page of the site as if their welfare is of any importance to Rio Tinto Coal? It seems almost dishonest to display that kind of thing because it is clearly a diversion of attention from people’s minds to things that don’t matter as much as the coal mining industry. People see the kids on the front page and think “oh how wonderful, a family company.” But all they need to do is look into it a little more to realize that their sensibilities are being exploited.
Most other coal websites will take pictures of their mining operations, of the mountains they mine in, of the people that actually work there in the course of a day working on the job. This is not so for this coal company, which only leads one to believe that they probably do have something to hide. It is a fairly dishonest practice and one that should not be maintained for much longer because it is one that could be caught onto by anyone at any moment as long as they just open their eyes. The fact is, Rio Tinto Coal may very well be a trustworthy company, but they need to admit that coal is harmful to the environment and the coal mining business should in no way involve children. This would be akin to a gun website picturing thousands of children. Children have nothing to do with guns and shouldn’t have anything to do with guns, so why are they being featured on the front page of the website? There need to be some serious reforms so as not to allow Rio Tinto Coal to be displaying an image that is not actually of the true business they’re running, but a clever diversion.
