Power plants that burn coal produces a by-product called Fly ash. Earlier, this by-product was treated as valueless and people used it very much for land filling. Nevertheless, there are few drawbacks as well with replacement of fly ash with cement for concrete. One such is the compressive strengthening duration of fly ash concrete. It happens at a much slower pace and takes a longer period than with other concrete. Some say it requires the mix of more admixtures with ash fly concrete to get the desirable results. Some countries have enforced restrictions in using ash fly for concrete. Nevertheless, many companies who produce admixtures for concretes have produced different types of admixtures to overcome these restrictions when using ash fly concrete.
Even though a few drawbacks are there with replacement of fly ash for cement in concrete, its value as a green product cannot be underestimated. In addition, the durability of concrete is also a plus point. Cost wise, using ash fly concrete is cheaper than other concrete substances. All these reasons have added extra value for ash fly concrete and its popularity in constructions is ever increasing at present.
