Energy Efficient Rating

The energy efficient rating basically is used for measuring the efficiency of any energy system or device. The derived rating is then used for indicating the amount of energy required for an appliance to perform a particular task. If the energy efficiency rating is low for an appliance it means more energy is required for performing a task when it is compared to the other appliances which are similar.

There are different energy efficient ratings used for different appliances.

SEER is used for rating the energy efficiency of residential air conditioners located centrally. By dividing a cooling output with power units consumed will provide a value for SEER. Higher number of SEER would make the unit energy efficient. Always try to look out for the unit which has SEER of either 12 or more.

EER helps in measuring energy efficiency for the cooling system wherein the outdoor temperature is constant at 95 degree Fahrenheit. EER is used for measuring the energy efficiency of air conditioners to be fixed in rooms. One important thing while considering these air conditioners is to always match the air conditioner size with the room size.

SEER as well as EER is basically the energy efficient ratings which are commonly used for the cooling systems located centrally. The unit for SEER is termed as BTU per hour. One example that is mentioned will give a proper clarification. If the residential AC uses around 700 watts of power to generate a cooling of around 5,000 BTU and the other air conditioner is using 500 watts of energy to give the cooling of the same unit, here the second appliance is more efficient as per SEER system.

Energy Factor stands for EF in washing machines which indicate the amount of complete cycle that a washer will function whilst using a kilowatt of electricity per hour. For energy efficient washing machines the EF has to be 1.18 however to qualify for the energy star an EF of 2.5 is required.

EF again is a unit which is used for measurement in appliances like dishwashers. It indicates the amount of cycles completed by the dishwasher using a kilowatt of electricity per hour. The dishwashers which are qualified for the label of Energy star need to have the Energy Factor or EF of either 5.2 or more.

For freezers and refrigerators the label itself indicates the total number kilowatts utilized per hour by the appliance considering the appliance operate for a year’s time. If the number is smaller the appliance is considered more energy efficient.
