Netherlands Wind Energy

A country that first earned the title of being a green country was Netherlands due to its focus on creating a greener environment by tapping into its wind resource. The country promotes the use of bicycles and uses electric trams instead of coal powered ones. Also it is able to sustain a large part of its requirement by harnessing wind energy. This is due to the extensive support and policies of the government to help promote and sustain wind farms. The reason the country has resorted to wind energy and not the usual water driven turbines is due to the fact that the water in the country does not flow with much force as the land is quite flat. The recent technological improvements in the area of wind turbines has changed the whole association of wind mills from large areas of land with tall aesthetic wind turbines to small noisy turbines that are not as picturesque as the older ones though they generate much more energy. Though wind farms were quite popular the increase in the country’s population has had a negative impact on the wind farms. The scarcity of space to set up wind farms has left the country no choice but to turn towards fossil fuels to help combat the enormous shortage of energy in the country.

The environmental impact of wind energy is a lot lesser when compared to fossil fuels and is also a renewable resource. Though the cost to set it up is a bit high it requires hardly any money to maintain and will reduce your energy bills and thus break even very soon. Many companies also pay consumers a certain amount to get excess energy they produce. In the Netherlands you can see a lot of wind turbines while driving through the country. A policy that helps encourage the citizens to produce their own energy and thus reduce the burden on the grid is that citizens get tax credits if they harness renewable sources of energy like wind and solar energy. the only negative aspect of harnessing wind energy is that it requires the wind to blow in the same direction as well as with enough force to generate the electricity and hence require a large are to set up. A wind farm will not be able to sustain itself nor produce enough energy in an urban setting making it a rural option only.
