How Hydrogen Fuel Cells Work

Hydrogen fuel cells are used for vehicles and generators. These cells hold pure hydrogen which can be used via reactions to produce large amounts of energy. The basic transition is chemical energy to electrical energy within the engine. There is a large amount of research being done to make this process more practical for the sake of hybrid and pollution free power sources. The waste product of this reaction is water vapor. Hydrogen fuel cells are large scale batteries. However the fuel cell alone is incomplete. There are many different varieties of hydrogen fuel cells the proton –exchange fuel cell is popular in hybrid car models.

The process of releasing energy from a hydrogen fuel cell begins when the hydrogen gas is inserted into the fuel tank and how hydrogen fuel cells work is once it is inserted the gas becomes ionized. The process of ionization causes the hydrogen atom to break down into its most basic form the protons and electrons. These two parts then attach to the cathode of the engine or generator that is being used. The proton exchange membrane in cars prevents electrons from passing through. The electrons are then passed into an electrical circuit producing electrical power which is used to power the hybrid car engine.

After the energy is created the waste products which is the proton and electrons reach the cathode. Oxygen is then fed to the cathode. The oxygen and hydrogen protons react to form water vapor. This reaction however produces heat which is another form of energy that other machines utilize. Both these waste products are passed out as exhaust. This cycle continues as long as the car needs to be powered up. A fuel saving system is installed in most hybrid cars and is how hydrogen fuel cells work. This system shuts down the engine and uses capacitors to provide energy for powering the air conditioning and lights.

Hydrogen fuel cells are sold in stacks similar to a dry cell battery. This is because a hydrogen fuel cell delivers low voltages and requires simultaneous process to provide significant power. The amount of power that can be output is determined by factors such as the size of the electrode and the starting current. The main challenges in making more viable hybrid cars is the ability to create a sufficient fuel system while maintaining space and comfort. At its current state the distance a car will travel will depend on the size of the hydrogen fuel system and how hydrogen fuel cells work.
