Hydrogen Membrane

Separation of the lightest gas on the earth hydrogen from other gases is, by penetration through an empty fiber hydrogen membrane. All the fast gases with high penetration rate diffuse through hollow interior and are channeled into the saturated stream whereas, other slow gases flow around the fibers and then into the filtrate stream. Through this process fast gases like hydrogen separates from the slower ones.

The hydrogen membrane could be used as a best supplement for the fuels used in vehicles. Due to environmental concerns and huge exhaust of toxic materials through transport fuel, has made us all wonder to think about its safest and easiest substitute. Hydrogen is present in abundant amount in the atmosphere still it is needed to be separated from other materials present with it.

Number of methods can be used to purify nitrogen from other materials, as hydrogen is the lightest gas, it's colorless, order less and can pass at a fast rate through permeation process. For hydrogen, purification can be done through dense metal purification technique in which nitrogen can be passed through dense metal membrane. At various stages of the penetration such as in adsorption i.e binding of hydrogen gas molecules on the membrane, its breakdown into ions and electrons and its suspension into the metal and subsequent diffusion through the metal. The dense metal membrane restrict the diffusion of other gaseous molecules whereas separate pure form of nitrogen.

Hydrogen can also be purified by non porous polymer organic method of purification. In this process membrane is non organic polymer, made of rubbery or glassy materials and require a certain amount of temperature to diffuse hydrogen from other gasses but the drawback of this method is along with hydrogen carbon monoxide also penetrates. Therefore hydrogen obtained from this method is not in its purest form. Porous material method or technique can also be used to purify hydrogen as it is more effective them polymer method and cannot penetrate poisonous gases like carbon monoxide or hydrogen sulfide. It is more efficient method of hydrogen purification.

Hence, many new techniques are invented from time to time for hydrogen membrane separation as hydrogen is considered as a most useful gas today, as it is necessary to substitute it with transport fuel through hydrogen hybrid system. It is important for the formation of healthier environment and cost efficient form of mobilization.
