Hydrogen Sulfide Detection

Hydrogen Sulfide is a colorless, flammable gas and a very toxic gas, so it’s considered very harmful to the human body. That’s why the hydrogen sulfide detection is of great importance for people’s safety. Its odor can be noticed when water is heated. And it is soluble in various liquids like water, alcohol, ether, and solutions of amines, alkali carbonates, and bicarbonates. Early detection of the hydrogen sulfide gas is important to protect employees from harm. Employees that work in the areas that contain hydrogen sulfide, should be trained to recognize the exposure of the gas. And they should take safety measures to protect themselves.

The nose is the best source foe the detection of any gas and Hydrogen sulfide gas can be detected at low concentrations. It reminds pretty much of the rotten eggs odor but as it is very dangerous so it becomes impossible to smell it more than 2 to 15 minutes. But at higher concentrations it smells sweet, which is kind of interesting by the way. Hydrogen sulfide by paralyzing the center of the brain and olfactory nerve may deaden the sense of smell.

Hydrogen sulfide detection can be done by the detector tubes which indicate the amount of gas by changed color of coated granules in a glass tube and also by the electronic monitors. Hydrogen sulfide can affect the body very badly if it is swallowed or when it comes in contact with the eyes, skin, and nose. Hydrogen sulfide gas may cause nausea, headaches, dizziness, upset stomach, loss of consciousness and death. In nature, hydrogen sulfide in nature is one of gas that is discharged from the volcanoes, it is commonly found in the volcanic plume.

Hydrogen sulfide detection is obvious during the making and process of crude oil, hydrogen sulfide pollutes the atmosphere and becomes very harmful. There are different instruments available for monitoring the gas. Hydrogen sulfide is a reagent in chemical analysis and also used in the preparation of oil additives and phosphorous. Hydrogen sulfide can react with iron in the well water (which has high iron content) to form iron sulfide that can be seen at the bottom of ponds as a sludge. So it’s very obvious that hydrogen sulfide can be commonly found in the ponds that have been established several years back. There are many deadly incidents of the harm caused by hydrogen sulfide gas but with safety system manufacturers, and monitoring equipment the workers can work safely without any harm when they encounter hydrogen sulfide gas.
