PA Coal Mines

Mining in Pennsylvania began just after the industrial revolution it started with the coal mining. It was the middle of 18th century by that time. Coal mining actually gained much importance due to the fact that the iron and steel industry needed support and currently all the electricity production and consumption is based on this coal mining. Two major kinds of coals Anthracite and Bituminous coal, mined in such large quantities is the major reason for the economic growth as well as the social growth of the state in terms of economic stability.

Production rate of the coal mines in Pennsylvania is so enormous that approximately ten million tons of bituminous coal has been produced here in the past two centuries. This achievement is mainly of the valuable twenty one counties present here, though the historic beginning of the coal mining began in the Washington Mountain otherwise known as Coal Hill.

These coal mines use two different processes for the extraction of the coal namely room and pillar, and long wall. But the long wall method gained much importance after the 90's. Till then the room and pillar method was used. But due to the less production, approximately by 40 percent the production became primarily dependent on the innovative measures applied by the long wall method. But still in very deep underground mines the room and the pillar method is still used where carrying and ventilation is carried out properly.

The coal which is mined results in huge income for the state of Pennsylvania due to the fact that large amount is exported to the other countries especially in the Eastern parts of the world. This results in a huge economic uplift of the state treasury along with the safety of employment. The mine workers directly or indirectly are recruited and thus this method assists the common people of the state in the social part of their life.

The history of the Pennsylvania Coal mining is large but had seen a very devastating past due to the various accidents occurring in the underground mining. Numerous unforgettable incidents have shaken the viability of this industry. Later on with the development of science and technology along with developed Geological safety measures led to the control of these accidents with strong hands. Introduction of medical facilities along with insurance for the mine workers actually led to the betterment of the working conditions. Special medical practitioners were employed for the purpose of the mining safety.
