Some research positions will require a graduate degree. An engineer will always need to continue their education as their career evolves because of the constant advancements in their field. Also licensure by the state that an engineer is employed in is necessary. An engineer must also be able to meet deadlines. Deadlines are necessary for the around the clock functioning of an oil rig. In the oil and gas industries they may spend quite a bit of time outdoors at exploration and production sites. The salary for an engineer in the oil and gas industry has starting salaries among the highest in college graduates. The median salary is approximately sixty thousand dollars per year. The engineering category in the oil and gas field is a position of longevity and constant expansion. Whether working on the infrastructure, building structure or a regeneration project, as an engineer in the oil and gas industry the jobs are plentiful.
