Mud Engineer
In the oil industry the very specific job title of mud engineer is also known as the drilling fluids engineer or the mud man. The mud engineer is the person responsible for fluids that are being used for the drilling process. This is a highly specialized job with no room for error. The person holding this job has to have a degree in chemical engineering and many years of drilling experience. The salary for this job is approximately $57,000 per year. The mud engineer can be found working on an oil rig. The mud engineer's job requires working a twelve hour shift. The other duties of a mud man are: ensuring that the chemical composition of drilling mud meet with determined specifications; the safe handling of chemicals and knowledge of chemical mixing procedures; assuring that safety data reports are correctly filled out and up to date; maintaining an accurate inventory list; ensuring that mud weight properties and pit volumes are recorded, monitored and updated continuously; general housekeeping of the mud engineer's work areas; monitoring drilling fluids; using reports from rigs and contractors address any issues; recommends corrective actions to any apparent issues and oversees corrosion control. This job necessitates a keen mental disposition, as well as a degree and plenty of rig experience.
The use of drilling mud is very important because it is used to provide hydrostatic pressure to the borehole, which controls the production of reservoir fluids. Also the drilling mud helps to cool and lubricate the drill bit. The drilling mud also creates a barrier called a filter cake which prevents the drilling fluid from permeating the borehole. The background in chemistry is a necessity because the drilling mud must be chemically compatible with the substance that is being drilled; if the two are not compatible that could lead to disaster. On land rigs the job of a mud man is also known as a derrick hand. In offshore rigs the mud man is known as the pump man. Due to the specialization of this job, the employee in the position of mud man will have to take a special training course called "mud school" and will spend quite a bit of time training with a senior mud engineer.
