Petroleum refining technology is an industry where there is considerable global interest. Refineries use the latest modern technology to convert the crude oil in to a variety of fuels and other products. The crude oil is refined in to fuel used by the automobiles and also for cooking.

Additionally many other products are also manufactured like asphalt, lubricating oils, and wax and energy feedstock. Any energy source used to produce non-energy source is called as an energy feedstock. Propylene and ethylene are the two main energy feed stocks.

Petroleum refineries also produce a lot of electricity on site and the main source is from the co generation units.

The Petroleum refining technology industry recognizes the need to invest in the research and technology for better growth and progress of the industry as a whole.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) along with the National Petrochemical and refiners Association (NPRA) together has developed a vision for the future of the industry. Technology Vision 2020 encompasses the technology, economy and future goals all in to one. The main role played in developing this Technology Vision 2020 is by API technology committee. This Vision 2020 is being evaluated and subjected to repeated examination and examination to include the latest needs of the Refining and the Petroleum industry.

The Technology Vision 2020 includes many salient features like adoption of the latest state of the art technology to accelerate the production and also to produce many more unconventional energy stocks. Emphasis will be laid on Biological processes like Bio processing of crude matter, bio treatment of the waste water, bio remediation of the under ground water and also the soil.

The electricity generated on site will be conveniently recycled back to increase the profitability and also to control costs and energy efficiency.

There will be a genuine and increased attempt at concern for the atmosphere and the inhabitants of this planet, and hence refineries will try to reduce the emissions as much as possible.

New technology for structural inspection and materials to allow for increased life of the plant equipments. The plant inspection will be global and in some cases will be done by remote control and will be on stream.

Increased concern for the environment and people working on these sites will be done by upgrading and improving the process of fuelling an also the under ground storage. Petroleum refining technology is thus a matter of intensive research and continued development.
