Amoco Corporation
There are several oil companies operating world wide, but the largest in North America is the Amoco Corporation. Established in 1889 as the Standard Oil company, it changed its name to Amoco in 1985, an is the largest natural gas provider in North America. Amoco also provides gasoline for over 9600 gas stations in 30 different states. Besides the gasoline Amoco also produces chemical products such as, chemical feed stocks, fibers, and polymers.
Besides their North America business, Amoco has expanded in to a world wide global operation. They currently have oil wells or markets in over 30 countries, including Great Britain, Brazil,. Russia, China, and Egypt. In recent times Amoco has also acquired a division of large oils companies making them on of the largest oil companies in the world.
The Amoco Corporation introduced 2 modern innovations in the gasoline business. The tanker truck, and drive through self serve filling stations. The tanker truck was copied from the railroad tanker and was first introduced By the Amoco Corporation. Self Serve gas stations were the idea of the Amoco Corporation, and is now used world wide by every gas station. This was to save labor, and make it faster and more convenient for the customer.
Amoco is now part of BP which is the 5th largest company in the world., and the 3rd largest global energy company.. The merger between BP, and Amoco began in 1998, and the name Amoco began to disappear by 2002. American service stations that were formerly Amoco, became BP stations ( demolished, and rebuilt) or operated under a competitors brand. Some former Amoco stations simply folded up.
Other then fuel Amoco began chemical production in the 1950's . Amoco scientists discovered a chemical now used for polyester production. In 1968 Amoco acquired to other fabric companies forming the Amoco Fabrics, and Fiber Company.
Amoco is one of leaders in the oil industry, and have many job opportunities. Oil rig jobs, as well as scientists, engineers, and sales positions are needed to operate an oil company. Both skilled, non skilled, professional, and scientific jobs are necessary. Amoco offices, and oil wells are operated world wide, so if a person is willing to relocate, or likes to travel, a position within an oil company may be a good career choice.
