Assistant Crane Operator

Assistant crane operators are one who can operate a crane. The premise is to one-day graduate to crane operator and the increase in annual salary will be a nice boost. The opportunity to be in charge of crane operations is a heavy responsibility. The job requires that the main focus is to be the best assistant to the crane operator. Helping to guide and bring supplies aboard is critical to the entire operation.

Learning the expertise of how to haul such items as castings, pipes, rig equipment, groceries, and other items on board without any mishaps is critical to the team effort. Other more subtle requirement to be a qualified assistant crane operator is the following.

1. Have a good sense of humor for those not so exciting moments

2. Have quick reflexes in case of emergency

3. Have pin point depth perception

4. Have knowledge of painting

5. Have the ability to clean

6. Be willing to perform general maintenance

Being a master of none and jack-of-all-trades really does apply here because of the versatility that goes with the position of assistant crane operator. The entire idea is to learn all that is possible in order to receive a promotion to another level while working on the rig. In many cases the term operating engineer is applicable to the assistant crane operator.

The assistant crane operator and the crane operator generally sit in the cabs and work the controls and commands from this position. Accuracy is a must because many times the operator is working in close quarters. The crane itself has a system of controls for the operator to utilize and a savvy operator will know which lever performs which directive.

These modern day cranes have the capacity for foot pedals, levers, dials, and switches along with a computerized control system that does come in handy. The educational process is rather intense and there are specific requirements that are in need of passing before continuing forward. In the beginning the individual is required to fulfill three years of intense study and one hundred forty-four hours of hands on experience.

Individuals learning how to become very astute of their surroundings will benefit from this training. Sometimes it can be a matter of survival or non-survival depending on the job the individual must perform. However, the most important number one rule is to remember you are a team player. This is not the type of operation that is for individual thinking, as there are other teammates whose lives are at stake.
