Assistant Mechanic

An assistant mechanic is responsible for the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment, and the oil industry has plenty of places where they need assistant mechanics, for instance on drilling fields and on offshore oil rigs. Assistant mechanics can make as much as $55, 000 per year. They may be called upon to work long hours, and must be available to work on short notice because the jobs generally entail fixing broken equipment in a hurry so the operation doesn't have to shut down. Sometimes the jobs require the mechanic to go into muddy oil fields, or up on high harnesses on an oil rig, and safety considerations are always of paramount importance.

The offshore oil industry, in particular, has many jobs because of the diverse operations and oil related functions that exist in the field. Some of these opportunities include work on production platforms, DP drill ships, DP and Anchored Drilling Semi-submersibles, jack-up drilling rigs, drilling tenders and barges, floating oil production, oil storage, offtake vessels (FPSO's), dive support vessels, pipe laying operations, seismic survey vessels, standby vessels, crane barges, offshore supply vessels, anchor operations, rock and stone dumpers and even other specialist areas.

Jobs are available outside of the United States. There are now positions that need to be filled in Canada. The Canadian Oil Sands industry in Alberta, most of which operates 24/7, 365 days of the year, continually posts oil sands job openings on their websites, which include assistant mechanic jobs. As in the case of most countries, there is a preference to hire 'natives' over foreigners. It's only natural that Canadian citizens fill many jobs because the oil sands are located in Canada, however, oil sands projects have created over 35,000 jobs and industry analysts estimate a need for more than 100,000 more workers between now and 2012, and there just aren't enough Canadians to fill all of the jobs in Alberta, so companies have recruited outside of Canada to fill certain specialized jobs in engineering and heavy equipment / machinery positions.

There are also jobs available over seas in places like Kuwait and South Africa, but if the mechanic doesn't want to leave the country, there are still plenty of jobs available close by.
