Barge Engineer

The offshore oil industry has never been busier because of the international demand for oil. Developing countries all over the word are experiencing growth and require oil from the oil producing countries. In fact, China is the second biggest consumer of oil in the world. Offshore oil exploration is leaping to the forefront of the field, and there are more and more new sites coming into production every year.

Barge engineers are integral to the workings of the offshore oil production system, and they need to be experts in their areas. Oil rigs and offshore drilling facilities can't function without the experienced services of barge engineers, so they are in high demand. Their salaries vary between $50,000 and $100,000 depending on the number of their responsibilities. The average salary of a barge engineer is $69,000.

Some of the basic responsibilities of barge engineers are: being in charge of vessel operation, control room operations, anchor handling, overseeing vessel maintenance. And that's not all; other parts of their job description includes protecting the vessel and the crew, protecting the cargo or property of the company, cargo administration and paper work, cost control, crew supervision and on the job training, and making sure that the job is completed on time and efficiently.

Barge engineers must have a good working knowledge of vessel operations and water safety. Most barge engineers have some experience as master merchants in the Navy. There are other requirements that may be necessary depending on the employers needs. For instance, some company's require that the barge engineer must read, write and speak English, in addition to another language. Some barge engineers must have a U.S. Merchant Mariner's document, a STCW training certification, and/or an Able Bodied Seaman and Tankerman's Certification. Occasionally, employers want specific job experience like previously working on a jack rig or having carried out rig moves.

There are many job opportunities for barge engineers in the U.S., and also in other areas such as the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea, Australia, East and West Africa, Southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, India, Mediterranean Sea, Central and South America and even China.
