Chief Electrician
Chief electricians are always in demand, no where more so than in the oil industry. The importance of their job is obvious because there is so much crucial equipment within the operation of the oil production team, that any serious malfunction would shut down the system and might cause the company to lose millions of dollars.
Chief electricians can work in the U.S. or internationally. Most oil companies are global now, so an electrician could be working in one place, while the headquarters of the main company is halfway around the world. Electricians can have a salary of between $30,000 and $60,000, and chief electricians make even more, depending on the size of the employer's company and how many assistant electrician the chief electrician is responsible for.
Electricians have the same general work no matter if they're on a drilling field, an offshore oil rig or at the company headquarters. They are responsible for installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing electrical equipment and systems. In the oil industry, electricians are employed by the maintenance departments of the contractors or by the main oil production company.
There are different requirements for the job of electrician depending on which company they are working for and where their job is. For instance, most U.S. electricians belong to the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and must follow the National Electric Code. And in places like Britain, there are special offshore survival and medical certificates that must be obtained if an electrician wants to work on an offshore rig in Britain.
A chief electrician must be familiar with all types of electrical systems, from hydraulic systems to pneumatic controls, and all related electrical devices. He must be able to supervise the electrical workers in their work, and manage scheduled troubleshooting tasks as well as be completely observant of all safety regulations pertaining to the job.
Offshore oil rig electricians are very well paid because of difficult conditions such as specially dirty, hot or wet working environments. They may have to stand for long periods or work at heights on masts, towers and roofs.
There are secure and well paid positions available for chief electricians in the oil industry.
