There are plenty of different jobs available for those wanting to go into the oil industry. But you do need to have the right skills and qualifications to be able to go as far as you want to.
There are different types of positions available too, one of which is a chief mechanic. Since most jobs in the oil industry are available on oil rigs which are located off shore, you should be prepared to work in this situation and be away from your family for longer periods if required.
A chief mechanic will be relatively well paid for their position though. This type of role involves making sure all the equipment needed to keep the rig running smoothly is maintained on a regular basis. Routine checks will be made and any problems should be fixed and resolved as soon as possible to keep things working efficiently.
Repairs will also be required and the chief mechanic will ensure that these are done in a timely manner. Obviously a track record in this kind of business is crucial - you won't be able to get this kind of responsibility in a job on an oil rig if you are fresh out of school.
Most of the time the shifts worked will be of a regular length, although you should be prepared to take on longer shifts if they are ever required. Needless to say this is a dirty and mucky job, but it is also a responsible one. If you miss something that needs repairing or fixing in some way, it could cause the whole oil rig to grind to a halt. In this sense, if you want to apply for the position of a chief mechanic you need to be good at working under pressure. If you aren't you might want to consider another position within the oil industry.
As you can see though this job does bring with it a lot of satisfaction in keeping things running as they should. Furthermore the financial rewards are quite good so you might want to work up to this position if you want to advance your career in the oil industry.
