Crane Operator

If you like the idea of having a responsible job on an oil rig in the oil industry, you might want to consider working as a crane operator. You will need to have experience of working as a crane operator - perhaps in another field - in order to apply, as you will need those skills to develop your career in the oil industry.

You will also have a certain degree of responsibility over some of the other workers on the oil rig. Your role usually comes with an assistant, so you will need to be confident in managing them and also in directing the roustabouts on the oil rig to help you with various tasks. As you can see, this role has far more to it than simply operating a crane.

You can start off as an assistant crane operator and indeed this is normally the best way to start your journey towards becoming a crane operator. Many positions for crane operators are filled from those people who have been an assistant operator for some time, so bear this in mind. If you have yet to get your first job on an oil rig you may do well to start as a roustabout. This role has various duties, but it also gives you the opportunity to learn how to work a crane.

As you get your experience as a roustabout you can indeed advance to learn about becoming a crane operator. So as you can see there are a number of ways you can advance to becoming a crane operator by getting a position on an oil rig which is slightly lower down the ladder.

As a crane operator though you will get valuable experience of working on the rig and making sure that the roustabouts and assistant operators have everything you need in position to help you. This is a challenging role but it is also very rewarding and it certainly keeps you on your toes. If managing all the cranes and related operations on an oil rig appeals to you, this could be just the job you are looking for.
