Derrickman

If you are thinking about getting a job within the oil industry, one of the positions you will often find is that of a derrickman. You will also see this written as two separate words on occasion - as derrick man. You may also see it advertised for women as well.

But where does this name come from and what does a derrickman do?

Well to begin with they work on an oil rig, so if you take up this job you will be working off shore. In addition to this you need to be confident with heights, because your work could well be undertaken as much as twenty five metres off the ground! To put that in perspective, if you imagine fourteen people of about five feet eight inches tall standing one on top of the other, that will be how high up you would be working.

You will be working on the rig tower and part of this construction is the mast. This is otherwise known as the derrick, which explains where the name for the job comes from.

Needless to say you need to be very fit and strong to perform this role because it is a very physical job. When oil is drilled for the drill is attached to a length of pipe. One of the tasks that would fall to you is to make sure this pipe is always ready and in the correct position to facilitate successful drilling. This is one of the main reasons for needing to be strong and fit - these pipes are not light!

You should also be able to accept the fact that this is not the safest job in the world. Of course it will not be made to be excessively dangerous but in the end you are high up and you will be in this position for most of the day while you are working.

Another thing you need to bear in mind is that although you would work shifts you wouldn't be able to go home at the end of them. Being on an oil rig means you will be there for several weeks at a time. However you would then go home for several weeks, so there are pros and cons.
