Electronic Technician

This job title might make you think of what an electrician does. But you need to be aware that this is a very different role in many ways, and it does not have the same level of responsibility or involve as many tasks as an electrician would take on.

The setting is the same though in that the job will very likely be based on an oil rig. As you might expect an oil rig has many different electrical systems that provide the necessary power and functionality to many of the jobs that take place there. If you take on the role of an electronic technician it will be up to you to make sure this equipment is properly maintained.

As such you can expect to be performing regular checks on a daily basis, making sure that all parts and systems are working properly. If you find something that isn't performing as it should be you will be required to repair it.

The nature of the tasks an electronic technician will perform can vary greatly. For example the simplest task of all would be to make sure that any light bulbs that go out are swiftly replaced. Needless to say if they weren't it could prove to be a hazardous error. Working on an oil rig is not the safest job in the world anyway and if the role of an electronic technician is carried out to the best effect it can influence what the working conditions are like.

The typical length of a shift in this job role is twelve hours. As such you will be away from your family for some length of time because it is not practical to be taken home for twelve hours before you have to start work again. But this is one of the reasons why working as an electronic technician attracts a good salary, to help make up for the inconvenience.

You should also have no fear of heights as you may be required to work off the ground on some occasions. This may not happen all the time but you need to be able to do it if necessary.
