Pumpman

A pumpman is an unlicensed member of the engineering department of a merchant ship, these service men are mostly found on oil tankers, pumpmen have chain of commands in that there is a chief pumpman, QMED/pumpman and a second pumpman, this job is a non enrty job level and most benefit that cover a full staff in a merchant ships are not extended to pumpmen.

Pumpmen are charged with works necessary for safety and proper operation of the liquid transfer system, maintenance of the cargo lines and connection manifold are main charged on these marine staff, common duties include rebuilding valves pumps and correcting leaks from a liquid fuel system, on some ships pumpmen are charged with the duty for the ballast systems, room heating systems and other engine department cores.

For those that work in a ship general duties will also include drilling skills and response emergency expertise, any other duties will be announced by their superiors, but its given that this cluster of staff will normally be kept on maintenances areas most of the time, as you already understand Pumpman needs abit of knowledge to be able to run he's day to day activities. Also they are sometimes exposed to dangerous working job conditions that a non entry level worker may not be advised to do.

The daily working hours of a pumpman ranges from 8hr to 12hrs overtime included, some of the benefits of a pumpman is that he is required to work continuously for 6o days then enjoy leaves that range from 20 to 30 days, this will vary with the employing company, however most companies, operating at the great lakes will normally have these offer to their pumpmen.

This not an easy job, the job sometimes will attract very harsh and dangerous working condition, so it imperative that anyone wishing to work in this office to be well aware of the challenges the position offers, overall the pay is great and the opportunities to rise through the rank are enormous. These should not stop any person wishing to be hired. At the point of starting your duties you will be trained on how to handle yourself while working, following instructions is very crucial at a oil rig or oil well platform base, any slight mistake can cause crucial problems.
