Steward
Oil rigs can be rough and dangerous places to work. They include long hours accompanied by hard physical labor. Most jobs on an oil rig require working in all kinds of weather and conditions. But one such job which is free from most of the elements is that of a steward. A steward on an oil rig may be responsible for all of the housekeeping duties and may assists in the kitchen. For large companies, the steward oversees the kitchen staff, checks over inventories, maintains accounts and supplies that are related to their tasks, and makes sure that all of the rooms are kept clean. If the steward works for a smaller oil company, they may actually serve as the head (or only) cook and may have to clean the rooms themselves.
Oil rig workers spend too many long hours toiling away to also have to keep up with housekeeping chores. Thus it is the main job of the steward to make sure that everyone's laundry gets done and that the living quarters stay clean. Since working on an oil rig can be a very dirty job, this makes for a big task. Laundry is a continuous daily job whether the rig employs a few crewmen or several teams. Rigs with large crews may require the steward to have a team of cooks and housekeepers under their supervision.
Stewards who work on an offshore rig can earn anywhere from $45,000 to $50,000 annually. Onshore rigs can earn less than that but still be within the $20,000 to $30,000 mark depending on the company. Steward position as some of the lowest paid in the industry. There are no prior skills needed to become a steward but it does provide a way to get into the oil drilling business. Although the job is not as physically demanding as a roughneck or driller, there is still a lot of responsibility and supervision that goes along with it. Stewards can also work their way up to being a camp boss which is the person responsible for the catering department aboard a rig.
