Subsea Engineer

When it comes to offshore oil drilling, one of the most important job titles is that if a subsea engineer. One of the few positions that actually requires a college degree, mostly in engineering but other degrees such as Chemistry and Geology are useful, too. Subsea engineers are responsible for everything that happens below the sea level. They design, build, and maintain all the equipment and system used under the ocean's surface.

The job duties that a subsea engineers is required to perform are underwater pipelines and pumps, subsea wellheads, underwater transportation equipment, and construction of offshore drilling platforms. Subsea engineers are skilled at underwater sonar and imaging devices, CAD programs, ROV's (remote-operated vehicles), and other specialized equipment. Subsea engineers can also create working models of construction projects and drilling rigs. These are used in simulations to test theories or equipment before they are ever put into use. These simulations are vital to discovering any potential dangers or faults within the systems.

Subsea engineers work closely with geologists, oceanographers, and other scientists to find optimal locations for drilling rigs on the ocean floor. Once a potential well has been discovered, the subsea engineer must work with the rest of the team to design a subsea structure that can operate properly. Subsea engineers can work both in shallow water projects or deep sea projects. Either classification has its own specific requirements and methods. Analysis of potential sites is usually conducted by a subsea engineer. Once discovered, the subsea engineer is responsible for monitoring production including safety precautions and daily reports.

Subsea engineers are in high demand as the key to any offshore drilling is efficient construction along with a system that links the drilling platform to the undersea wellhead. Salaries for subsea engineers varies according to companies but average rates range fr0m $60,000 to over $80,000 a year. Some of the top oil companies pay even more than that. A bachelor's degree in subsea engineering from a credited university is adequate to land a job as an assistant subsea engineer. However, senior positions might require a Master's degree along with several years experience.
