316 Stainless Steel

You are likely to have heard that there are different kinds of steels and one of them is the stainless steel, which is also considered to be the most used one. However, you would probably be extremely fascinated to learn that the stainless steel itself could also be ‘split’ into a couple of sub-categories- 304 stainless steel 316 stainless steel.

Mentioning both of them is not accidentally since when the 316 stainless steel is mentioned, it is usually compared with its ‘older cousin’- the 304 type. However, this article is going to be different and will inform you about the chemical, physical and mechanical characteristics of the 316 type and nothing else but that.

Anyway still it should be mentioned that the 316 stainless steel has got excellent corrosion resistance, even better than the resistance of the ‘cousin’ actually. But that is not all: it also has excellent heat resistance and welding characteristics but, to be objective again, they are not better than the characteristics of the 304 type. And that is where the comparison between both of them ends. From now, you are going to read about nothing else but the 316 stainless steel.

Let’s start with the chemical properties. You are most likely to be interested in what elements compose the steel itself. It is assumed that you know that steel is an alloy which contains different elements (most of which metals). Well your curiosity will be satisfied as you are going to be informed about that. The 316 type of steel consists of Magnesium, Carbon, Silicon, Cuprum, Nickel, Nitrogen and others. The proportion of each element could vary but there are three main conditions according to which three groups of the 316 stainless steel could be divided: 316 (ordinary), 316L and 316H.

Once the chemical elements have been explained, mechanical information needs to be given also. In fact, the only fact which you are likely to need to know from this ‘sector’ is the Tensile Strength: it is 515, 485 and 515 MPa, respectively for the 316, 316L and 316H stainless steel.

And as the information has probably become too much to you, the physical characteristics will be given very briefly: the density if 8000 kilograms per square meter, the elastic modulus is 193 GPA and the electricity resistance is around 740 ohms. Hopefully, all that information was useful to you since you can already have the confidence that you know many facts about the 316 stainless steel.
