The basic type in use for metal works is thin pieces of metal. It is called steel sheet metal as well. You can bend, cut and shape metal sheet in any way you want. Objects that are made of metal sheets are countless. Thickness of metal sheet varies significantly and extreme thickness of sheet metal is called leaf or foil. The sheet metal above 6 mm thickness is called plates. You can buy sheet metal as coiled strip or flat pieces.

The gauge of the sheet metal is its thickness. Gauge is measured from 8 to 30 gauges. When the gauge rate is higher the metal is thinner. For example, 30-gauge is the thinnest sheet metal available in the market. Sheet metal is made of many metals. You can have sheet metals made of brass, copper, tin, nickel, aluminum, titanium, silver, platinum, steel, or even in gold. Airplanes wings, car bodies, roofs, medical tables, and many other things made of sheet metals.

High permeability sheet metals like iron are taken to manufacture electric machineries and transformers. They are taken for many decorative works as well. From these types of sheet metals, steel sheet metal is used vastly for applications that need durability. They are also taken for decorative works due to its aesthetic values.

There are three grades of stainless steel metal and they are 304, 316 and 410 grades. The grade hugely in use is 304-type, as this type has more corrosion resistance than other types. You can form and weld this type more easily. Nevertheless, 304 forms are not available as sheets. The strength of grade 316 is notable, as it could last in high temperatures. You can have this grade as steel sheet metal. This type is in use to manufacture valves, chemical equipment, marine components, pumps etc. Grade-410 stainless steel is heat treatable but it has less corrosion resistance. Grade 410 stainless steel metal is used to manufacture cutlery.

You can have pre-coated steel sheet metal, galvanized steel sheet metal, stainless steel perforated metal, rolled steel sheet metal etc., from the market. Pre-coated steel sheet metal is used to manufacture roofing sheets, guttering, cladding, decoration items etc. However this type is not used for structures. Constructors use galvanized steel sheet metal for roofs of industrial and residential architectural work. It is also used for covers of chimneys, kitchen utensils, electrical appliances, parts of automobiles etc., as well. Perforated steel sheet metal is perfect to manufacture panels for buildings. This metal is used for decorative designs of architecture as well.
