Darrieus Wind Turbine

The Darrieus wind turbine is a special turbine that is used to take in energy provided by the wind and translates that wind energy into electrical energy that can be used by anyone for any type of electric device. Though the Darrieus wind turbine should theoretically be as efficient or possibly even more so than its pinwheel shaped counterpart, in practice this is never true. The device has problems self starting (often having to have a special motor employed just to get it started pulling in air, which thus wasted electricity and defeats the entire purpose of the thing) and is also so oddly shaped and thing, that when wind speeds get too high, it needs to be extensively protected and roped down for fear of it taking on damage, again defeating the entire purpose of the Darrieus wind turbine. What kind of device doesn’t’ actually work in the exact conditions that it is supposed to work best in? That is like a person who would theoretically have the body type allowing them to be the best swimmer of all time in the competitive world, if only they knew how to swim. This gigantic wind turbine was ambitious, I will give the scientists, that, but it turned out to just be an ambitious waste of government and private funding.

If there is even the slightest variation in wind speed, it will confound the Darrieus model, causing it to slow down and stop up and vary speeds like crazy. It will eventually self correct and probably get on its way to working once more, but this can take a long time and that is time that many people just don’t want to use waiting for it to work. The real tragedy is that it was not built to be more efficient than the pinwheel model, but it was meant to be just as efficient. This means that even with its mistakes, if it was meant to be more efficient, we could at least say “oh well, at least it’s just as efficient.” But it wasn’t made that way. This means that every time it fails or falters, it is paling in comparison to its cheaper more well researched cousin that we already knew worked, the pinwheel model. Whoever came up with the Darrieus model should be ashamed of them for inventing it since it is such a waste in comparison to the others out there. This is such a tragedy to science and the economy just knowing that something like that exists.
