How To Build A Wind Turbine
Wind provides a renewable energy source that is worth well investing in. There are wind turbines sold by manufacturers that are meant for household use. These only need assembling and installation. Then again, not every eco-friendly person wants to roll out thousands of dollars to purchase something that is actually supposed to save them money. That’s where the idea of building a wind turbine comes in. For a person with the time, resources and willingness to learn, building a turbine from home is entirely possible. You get to save thousands in the process as well. Though the finished product is not equal to what you would get from a manufacturer, you end up with a functional turbine, which is the goal.
To build a wind turbine, you need to assemble all the materials that you are going to need for the job. Basically, you will need blades, a rotor assembly, a generator, and a mounting plate for the turbine. While you may feel the need to put together the turbine from scratch, it is good to acknowledge the intricacies of the process. For instance, with the blades, the dimensions need to be perfect, in terms of size, shape and mass. If you can’t assemble some with the precise specifications needed, you can buy them instead as with your rotors. When it comes to the generator, you have the option of assembling one, or buying it. Building a generator is complicated, so buying one is the most practical option available. A DC motor can take its place, in case you find difficulty obtaining one.
Once you have your materials in place, you need to assemble them. Start with putting the blades together by mounting them to the rotor, connected to the rotating shaft. Make sure they are held in place to be able to withstand any wind strength. Next, you need to put your generator in place, connected to the shaft with gears. A rotation results in the production of a direct current, as would a DC motor. Make sure there is connection to a grid, or battery to store up the produced power. Once everything is complete, you need to make a tower for the turbine. You need to understand the height you erect it to, so that it is sufficiently exposed to the wind, for maximum rotation.
This outlines the basics of building a wind turbine. There are so many specifics that have not been addressed, but more detailed guides are availed in online and offline sources.
