Offshore Wind Farms

Offshore wind farms are establishments created in offshore regions, or large water bodies, for the purpose of electricity generation from wind. The farms are offshore preferentially because wind is stronger, and more frequent, compared to the onshore regions. Wind energy is looked up to because of the increasing consumer needs that cannot be sufficiently met by the other methods of electricity generation. Most countries with increased demand for power have resulted to wind power harnessing for increased energy turnover.

A typical offshore wind farm typically has turbines. These may be fixed at the bottom of the water body they are in, or they could be afloat. The latter is more complex, and that probably reveals that it is the newer technology, more expensive technology. The idea is simple- the more the wind turbines, the greater the amount of energy that can be produced. That explains why there is usually an abundance of wind turbines at any offshore wind farm.

Offshore wind farms are strategically located for maximum gain. A detailed study of the offshore area has to be carried out, so that consistency of currents is ascertained. This is important to ensure that there is a steady flow of wind, since this, results in generation of more power. With geographical factors coming into play, there are certain offshore regions that are deemed more profitable than others. The rule is if there are large marine current flows, an offshore wind farm would do well.

Offshore wind farms have some advantages over the farms erected onshore. For one, location in the open waters means that there is less noise disturbance for populations. There is also no visual impact, since the turbines used in the farms are rather gigantic. Some of the noteworthy disadvantages include the fact that operation in the offshore wind farm is harder, more so with the issue of access. But it is a limitation that is easily overcome. There are challenges that are met by offshore wind farms, and these are indeed noteworthy. For instance, installations and establishments costs are higher, and so are the costs of maintenance. But the bigger picture of energy generation from natural sources makes these challenges seem minor.

With the growing demand for energy, offshore wind farms are readily being embraced by many countries, in a bid to raise the dependency on renewable energy. Carbon emissions from the alternative energy generation methods are highly undesired, which is one more point for wind energy harnessing.
